Stationary (or static) engines are used extensively around the world to generate electricity in generators or so called ‘gensets’. The engine may be fixed or movable but often the engine oil used in these machines needs to be able to cope with difficult environmental conditions and flexible fuel quality. Large diesel engines have traditionally been employed but increasingly common are gas engines fuelled by natural gas, bio gas or landfill gas and engines that are tolerant to gas quality.

Polymeric friction modifiers, PerfadTM 3057 and Perfad 3006, have been shown to be able to reduce the friction of heavy duty engine oil formulations. The following results are Mini Traction Machine (MTM) graphs for Premium synthetic low SAPS 5W30 CJ-4 fuel economy grade heavy duty diesel engine oil top treated with 0.5% Perfad in a mixed slide-rolling regime (36N, 135°C, 50% SRR).
Additionally a significant wear reduction seen of the MTM disc after 6 hours using these polymeric friction modifiers. The wear scar volume was reduced by 70%.
