What is it?
The MPP 5Gs Analyser is used to measure the cloud and pour point temperatures of fluids during cooling.
Pour point is the lowest temperature at which the product continues to flow when it is cooling, without stirring.
Cloud point is the temperature at which components within the fluid under test precipitate on cooling.
Why do we use it?
Cloud and pour point characteristics are indicative of low temperature behaviour of a product.
Often a product will need to be pumped after storage; therefore the cloud and pour point temperatures are helpful to determine suitable storage temperatures.
The results also help in the assessment of whether a product will be able to maintain performance under temperature conditions to which it will be subjected during use.
How does it work?
A vial filled with the sample to be tested is placed into the sample changer. The cooling of the sample is then controlled automatically, cooling at a rate of 1.5°C per minute. Optical detectors monitor the appearance and disappearance of crystals to determine the cloud point. Pour Point is determined by measuring the pressure differential across the cooling cell and monitoring the temperature at which the pressure differential changes.
Test Capabilities:
Results obtained using the MPP 5Gs are correlated to the following test methods:
Pour point: ASTM D97, ASTM D5950
Cloud point: ASTM D2500, ASTM D5771, ASTM D5772
